The artisans who create these colourful wooden figures live in 3 villages, surrounding the picturesque Oaxacan valley. Carved out of "Copal" wood, these artists look for their inspiration in the twisted maze of branches. They can see a frog, rabbit, iguana, devil or giraffe in the wood, and draw inspiration from their creative imaginations.
The traditional carving involves the whole family. The men carve the animals while the wood is wet. When the wood is dry, it is sanded to a smooth finish, and painted in bright colours by the women and children of the family.
