Mexican Hand-Painted Ceramic Pottery Talavera is high-quality decorative earthenware pottery recognised by its strong colours and detailed patterns. The raised painted detail is a trademark of the fine quality of this indigenous craft. The rich Talavera pottery heritage was introduced to Mexico by Spanish guild artisans of the Colonial period. Commonly called "majolica" in Spain, Mexican Talavera draws its name from the 16th century Spanish pottery centre, Talavera de la Reina. Today, this earthenware ceramic pottery is produced in many regions of Mexico utilizing the techniques, skills and cultural influences attained over the centuries. While the intricate polychrome and more typical blue and white designs show their Old World legacy, native floral and animal motifs claim these colourful ceramics as classically Mexican. |
Can I use it for food serving and preparation? Yes! The paints and glaze used in making Talavera pottery dinnerware are lead-free so they can safely be used as household dinnerware. Los Andes’ Talavera dinnerware is oven and dishwasher safe. However…even though Talavera can be used for food serving and preparation, it is fine ceramic earthenware and may chip or break if little kids (or big kids!) do not handle it carefully. So be warned! Some ornamental pieces are for Display Purposes Only and are marked as such (D.U.O)
Please note: Each Talavera item is handmade and hand painted, so variations in color and style will occur. For a detailed description of what is currently in stock, please contact us. |
