VARIOUS: Putumayo presents – French Caribbean (2003)

Virtually all of the music from Haïti, Martinique and Guadeloupe is based on traditional African rhythms. The traditional music of Martinique is most prominently expressed through folkloric forms such as the ‘belé’ and ‘danmyé’. Similarly, Guadeloupe’s ‘gwoka’ is one of the oldest forms of African music in the Americas. Its origins can be traced all the way back to 17th century drumming in Guinea and the Congo. This album takes you on a musical cruise to the French Creole Caribbean Islands of Martinique, Haïti and Guadeloupe with a collection of fun, upbeat compass, zouk, beguine and more.
