IFAD Photo by Alberto Conti: Bolivia-Chuquisaca North Agricultural Development Project

For the Aymara and Quechua peoples, who live in the highlands of Bolivia and southern Peru and on the shores of Lake Titicaca, textiles have remained the most important form of artistic expression for three thousand years. The cloth is a highly regarded heirloom that gets passed down for generations - connecting people to their ancestors. To this day, modern Andean costume is used to distinguish gender and regional affiliation.

The women start the weaving process by spinning fine yarn taken from the herds of llamas, alpacas or sheep that graze along the Altiplano. These animals range in color from white, rich browns through to black, and so do the textiles woven from their wool.

Traditionally, animal motifs are used which are handed down through the generations from mother to daughter. Unfortunately, many families have lost this art due to extreme poverty. But thanks to the efforts of aid organisations such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), who enable the rural poor to overcome poverty, this ingenious ancient art is being revived again.

The samples here show the beautiful patterning. The dense interiors of the cloth are actually quite complex. For instance, the horses and birds appear in the reverse colors on both sides of the textile.

To create a motif like this, the weaver picks up yarns with her fingers or with the aid of a sharpened tool - a technique that takes years to achieve perfectly.

Los Andes proudly supports these local indigenous artists, ensuring each affordable piece is unique, authentic and respectfully identified by the artist’s name.
