Tapetas Process h Los Andes: 287 Victoria Street |
| |
These stunning, sturdy handwoven rugs (tapetes) are made from naturally dyed wool using traditional methods. Generations of families have handed down this weaving tradition to their children - passing on the techniques and equipment to transform the wool into yarn for weaving. Each one is tightly woven using a combination of both regional and pre-Columbian designs. The Zapotec weavers can spend a month for a small weaving up to a year for a larger one, putting a part of their spirit into each. It is believed that owning a “tapete” brings good fortune to the owner. This page shows the source of the dyes used, and the major steps in the dying process. We hope you are as amazed at their inginuity as we were! Los Andes proudly supports these local indigenous artists - ensuring each affordable piece is not only unique and authentic, but contributes to this incredible community enterprise. If you are inspired to own a tapetes of your own to pass down through your family, go to Mexican Tapetes or contact us. |
